The Consultation
Living in Gibraltar, I was already familiar with Dr. Thomas Boerger. During my consultation at The College Clinic, he explained everything about the procedure to me in detail; and went through my x-rays. His approach and way of talking was very easy to understand.
Dr. Boerger also introduced me to the private hospital, HC Marbella where I would have operation.
I felt well informed to think things through at home and decide whether to go on the waiting list with the GHA, or instead go private and start living pain-free.
But I knew I had reached that point with the pain that I just couldn’t face waiting any longer. So, I decided to go-ahead with the private surgery.
The Procedure
I was nervous, well to be honest, scared about the operation. I was thinking it was much bigger than it was. In fact, it was far less than I expected, and much easier. I needn’t have been so worried.
The hip replacement was performed at HC Marbella. Well, that private hospital is more like a 5 star hotel – the food, the care, the environment.
I opted to pay extra to stay a few more nights, so that I felt I was really confident to head home.
The day after the hip replacement the physiotherapist taught me how to get around with a walker and then progress to crutches. Each morning the physio would go through different exercises, including exercises that can be done in bed.
I was confident to walk with the frame and soon enough I was using the crutches.
It’s now three months since the op. and I am not using anything. I take a crutch with me just for a sense of security but I’m independent.
