Client Testimonial – Left Partial Knee Replacement with CORI Surgical System

Louise, Gibraltar

‘Since having my left Partial Knee Replacement with Dr. Thomas Boerger, I am back cycling, rowing, and walking my dogs! What’s more, my recovery following the procedure with Thomas Boerger was significantly faster, compared to my experience in the UK, where I had my right knee replacement. Dr. Thomas Boerger made me feel very confident in my choice to go ahead with a CORI Surgical System assisted Partial Knee Replacement. He went into everything in real depth, conveying his knowledge and CORI training both in the UK and here in Spain. He even recommended the same implant as the one used in my other knee replacement. So, yes, he instilled a lot of confidence in me.’

This was my second partial knee replacement, following my right knee partial replacement in 2021 in the UK. I’m a fitness instructor and coach, and in the Scotland I was an avid hill runner. I have always been fit and healthy, and I’d spend a lot of time running, but suddenly I reached a point when I couldn’t run anymore.

This had a huge mental impact too, so I was motivated to find a solution. I was not willing to be in pain and inactive, so searched for a way to recover and that’s when I discovered the CORI Surgical System assisted Partial Knee Replacement.

After my first Partial Knee Replacement I moved to Gibraltar and got back into fitness, with activities that were well adapted with my new knee, like rowing.

My left knee was playing up already, but I was optimistically thinking that the warm sunny climate of Southern Europe would help recovery. I persevered but I knew I didn’t want to go through the debilitating pain and immobility I had suffered before. I wanted normality back in my life.

Consultation

During this time, I had started working at Specialist Medical Clinic, where Thomas Boerger consults, so it made sense to see him. I had AXA medical insurance, which enabled me to have MRI scans and a very in-depth consultation. Dr. Thomas Boerger is very knowledgeable, and he’s clearly an expert with the CORI Surgical System, so having the procedure with him  felt like the right choice.

Procedure

Once I was at HC Marbella, where I was having the procedure, I met his colleagues in the CORI specialists, and when we went into theatre, he introduced me to the nursing team. It was very professional and friendly.

In the UK I was operated on with general anaesthetic, but Dr. Thomas Boeger uses local anaesthetic, and for me that was better, as I found recovery afterwards to be much faster. After my UK operation, I took about 8 to 9 months to recovery, while following my partial knee replacement with Thomas Boerger it was accelerated.

Recovery

I was off all painkillers by day 5, off crutches after 10 days, back at the gym after 6 weeks.

I achieved the same level of recovery here after 13 weeks, than I did in the UK after more than 8 months. I was in the right mindset for recovery, I lost weight and stayed healthy and focused on recovery, but also the surgery was less invasive.

Aftercare

The aftercare has been great. I was up and walking the next day. As soon as you have the operation the joint pain goes, and I just had the tightness of the healing, and during the following weeks there is some discomfort and pain as you adjust to the prothesis. I had my 6-week check-up and Thomas Boerger was over the moon with my progress, with almost full leg extension.

In the UK you feel like just a number, but with Dr. Thomas Boerger and his team including Louise I really felt cared for. Thomas even visited me at the weekend when I was in the hospital, and Lousie has been fantastic.

I don’t think I’ll ever be running again, as I do not want to wear out my new knees, or put unnecessary impact on my joints, as I realise my intensive sports did wear out my knees, but I am back to cycling, rowing and walking my dogs

I recommend Thomas Boerger, he’s an amazing guy!
